06/11/2019Brian McAteerThe Colintraive Hotel, a few yards from the ferry jetty across the Kyles of Bute from Rhubadoch, is serving beer from Fyne Ales, usually Jarl they told me. There's only one handpump. Last Saturday, 2 November, the beer was very good. I also called into the Port Inn at Port Bannatyne but there was no cask beer available. According to staff, there hasn't been since the Bute Brewery closed. I know there have been beer scores posted from there so it's a bit confusing. There's a Fyne Ales keg on the bar......The Port Royal Hotel, which won various awards as the Russian Tavern a few years ago, has been up for sale for some time and was closed when I passed.
03/11/2019Nick SimmondsPromising Shawlands news. Sweet Recreation, the latest incarnation at 87 Kilmarnock Road (recently the short-lived Mr Wu's Disco Kitchen, I wonder why that failed?!) has a handpump that will be dispensing Black Isle beers; they are a "sponsor" of the bar. I visited late afternoon on Saturday 2 November and the cask was waiting to go on (I made do with some excellent Swedish craft Apex IPA) but the intention is that real ale will be permanently available. It does get a bit more like a restaurant in the evenings and quite a few tables were booked - the menu is gourmet burgers - but it is always acceptable to come in just for a beer. As it is Koelschip Yard related, it is card only payment.
